A Collaborative Approach to an Urgent Need for Housing

Continuing an ongoing relationship with the County of Los Angeles Department of Public Works, Bernards served as builder of this landmark 60,000 square foot interim housing facility which provides 232 beds for those experiencing homelessness. Initially referred to as the Vignes Street Interim Housing Project, the facility has recently been renamed the Hilda L. Solis Care First Village (HSCFV). Addressing the immediate need to provide shelter to a growing homeless population increasingly impacted by COVID-19, the County worked in close collaboration with NAC Architects and Bernards to create this component-based solution that supported an agile design, construction, and approval process to meet a highly aggressive schedule.

A Modular-Based Design Plan

The use of modular construction streamlined the design process and reduced preconstruction time. The HSCFV complex incorporates several prefabricated building components. The design includes 132 permanent units housed in 66 re-purposed shipping containers configured as three-story structures, 100 beds in 20 temporary trailers, and an administration building with offices and production kitchen in a 9-unit wood modular building.
